Łupki near Wleń: the ruins of the oldest stone castle in Poland, the baroque Lenno palace and the Góra Zamkowa nature reserve above the Bóbr.
Is Wleń Castle really the oldest in Poland?
That is how sources describe it. Wleń Castle, also called Wleński Gródek, stands on Castle Hill above the Bóbr river, at 383 m. The stone castle was built at the end of the 12th century on the initiative of Duke Bolesław the Tall, on the site of an earth-and-timber stronghold that had already become a castellany in 1108. It is one of the few castles in the Romanesque style. After safety work the ruins are open to visitors.
What does the Lenno palace complex look like?
The Lenno palace complex in the part of the village called Wleński Gródek was built on the grounds of the former outer castle. The baroque palace was founded in 1653-1662 by Adam von Kaulhaus, a colonel in the service of the French king Louis XIII. After Count Jan Karol Grünfeld bought the estate in 1730 the building was reworked. Inside, 17th-century frescoes and a stone staircase survive, and coats of arms of the owners hang above the entrance. The park is in the register of monuments.
What does the Góra Zamkowa reserve protect?
The Góra Zamkowa reserve covers 21 hectares of forest on the top and eastern slopes of a 360 m hill. It was created in 1994 to protect slope sycamore woods, lime and maple forests, and pillow lava. The castle ruins stand on the summit, so you can combine both sights in one walk. Entry is free.
