Attractions in Jugów: Kalenica with its lookout tower, Żmij with a paraglider meadow, Popielak, Włodyka and a 19th-century railway viaduct.
Which peak should you climb from Jugów?
The highest is Kalenica, 964 m above sea level. It is the third highest peak of the Owl Mountains (Góry Sowie), after Wielka Sowa (1015 m) and Mała Sowa (972 m). A steel lookout tower stands on top: it was built in Bielawa in 1932 and put up on Kalenica a year later. Originally it was called the Hindenburgturm. The slopes hold a beech forest reserve and rock formations called the Wild Rocks (Dzikie Skały). The peak is built of Precambrian gneiss and migmatite, and a field of loose rock covers its surface.
A little over a kilometre further on rises Popielak, 860 m. Pick it when you want to link two summits in one trip. Check the trails and starting points before you set out, because the area is crossed by many paths. Żmij is 887 m high and lies in the Owl Mountains Landscape Park, about 2.5 kilometres east of Jugów. There is a take-off meadow for paragliders and a group of rocks on the southern slope.
What is there in Jugów besides the Owl Mountains?
The lowest of the four peaks is Włodyka, about 682 m, in the Wyrębińskie Hills, around 1.1 kilometres west of the centre of Jugów. Above a gap in its ridge stands a historic steel railway viaduct on stone pillars. Traces of Organisation Todt works from 1943-45 remain here as well.
The second viaduct, the railway viaduct in Zdrojowisko, crosses a valley on line no. 286 between Kłodzko and Wałbrzych. The first section of that line, from Kłodzko to Nowa Ruda, opened on 15 October 1879. The structure had two tracks, but the track on the southern part was removed in the early 20th century, so trains now run only on the northern side. It is a working railway structure, so you view it from outside. A good target for a walk for two.
From Jugów you can easily reach other places in the region: Kłodzko, Kudowa-Zdrój, Nowa Ruda and Lądek-Zdrój. We collected the peaks alone on the page about mountains in Jugów.
