Chełmsko Śląskie has a Gothic sculpture on the square and two Zawory peaks within walking reach. See what to visit and how to plan the route.

What to see in Chełmsko Śląskie itself?

Start at the market square. On the corner of the house at Rynek 4 stands a Gothic sculpture of St Hedwig from around 1500. The patron saint of Silesia holds a church in her hand, most likely a reference to the first church built in the town. It is free because you view the sculpture from street level, at any hour. It stands on the way to St Anne's Chapel, so it is a natural first stop before heading into the hills. The Cistercian Abbey in Krzeszów also lies nearby and fits a plan for the next day.

Where to hike from Chełmsko?

Róg is 715 m above sea level and the highest peak in the north-western part of the Table Mountains (Góry Stołowe). Its summit is a flat, spruce-covered plateau, and a paragliding take-off point operates on the slope. The peak lies about 2.2 kilometres north-east of the town. The south-western and northern slopes are steep and the eastern one gentle, and two long parallel clearings run down the south-western side towards Chełmsko. On its slope stands St Anne's Chapel, a votive church on Róg mountain in the Zawory range, part of the Holy Family parish in Chełmsko Śląskie. Before 1945 it carried the German names St. Anna Kapelle and Annen Kapelle. Check opening times and access with the parish before you set out, because the sources do not give them.

The second option is Złota Góra, a peak of about 577 m above sea level in the same Zawory range. It is built of red Permian sandstone and mudstone, and meadows and pastures cover the massif. Within a few kilometres lie the Głazy Krasnoludków and Kruczy Kamień nature reserves, so a second goal is easy to add to the walk. It is a lighter choice than Róg when you want views more than climbing. Both peaks carry the "Free" and "Solo" tags, so they suit a walk on your own.

How to combine Chełmsko with the area?

A good day plan is the sculpture on the square in the morning, then the chapel and Róg, and a drive to the neighbouring towns in the afternoon. From Chełmsko it is close to Kamienna Góra, Lubawka, Krzeszów, Błażejów and Jarkowice. Each has its own list of places on a separate page.
