Things to do in Rościszów: the Wielka Sowa tower, wooded peaks of the Owl Mountains, a hillfort and a stable with Gypsy Cob horses.

What to see in the Owl Mountains near Rościszów

The key stop is the Wielka Sowa observation tower. Wielka Sowa is the highest peak of the Owl Mountains (1,015 m above sea level), and the concrete tower was built in 1905-1906. It belongs to the Pieszyce municipality and is free to enter. It is made of concrete blocks, which sets it apart from the typical stone observation towers built in the Sudetes at a similar time, and trails reach it from several directions. The portal tags it "Great views", "For couples" and "Solo".

Several wooded peaks lie nearby. Młyńsko (Mühlberg in German) is 777 metres high and less than two kilometres from Wielka Sowa. Zameczna (618 metres) stands in the Owl Mountains Landscape Park, and an unmarked, little-used route runs along its ridge towards Wielka Sowa. It is built of Precambrian gneiss and migmatite, and its slopes bear traces of old mining works. Kokotna Łąka (603 metres) is a beech and spruce peak with remains of a former silver and lead mine on its eastern slope.

Is there any history here?

The hillfort on Forteczna lies at 535 metres, inside the landscape park. It is an earthwork halfway between an early medieval stronghold and a late medieval castle, hard to make out on the ground. The summit also keeps remains of Austrian fortifications from the Seven Years' War. So do not look for walls, but for the outline of an oval hill. The name "Grodzisko" appears often in Lower Silesia, so in your navigation search specifically for Forteczna.

Where to spend time with horses

Podolin Stable breeds Gypsy Cob horses, known for their calm temperament. It teaches riding to beginner children and teenagers in small groups, organises riding camps and has guest cabins. Classes and camps are aimed at outside participants, not only people who keep their own horses here.

The peaks alone are gathered on Rościszów: mountains, and places for a solo trip on Rościszów solo. Dzierżoniów offers more ideas.
