Klodzko attractions: a fortress above town, an underground route beneath the square, the Iron Bridge and hills within walking distance.

This page covers sights inside Klodzko itself, from the hilltop fortifications and the cellars under the Old Town to bridges, churches and a few small hills on the edge of the city. If you plan to go further into the Klodzko Valley, the last section before the FAQ points you to the mountains and caves nearby.

Where should you start in Klodzko?

Start with Klodzko Fortress, which defines the skyline. The defences on the hill were built in stages from the Middle Ages to the 18th century, and today a museum runs surface routes and underground countermine corridors. After the fortress, walk down to the square and go below ground.

The fortress is a whole defensive system, not a single building. Between 1690 and 1702 the medieval walls were replaced with curtain walls and bastions, and the bastions still carry their own names: Jabłonki, Ludmiły, Wacława, Alarmowy and Dzwonnik. Give it plenty of time and wear comfortable shoes.

The hill itself is called Forteczna Góra (369 m above sea level) and lies about 300 metres from the main square, so the walk from the centre is short. A closed Historical Shooting Range also operates within the fortress grounds, open to visitors and locals alike.

What can you do in Klodzko when it rains?

For bad weather the best choice is the Underground Tourist Route. It runs for roughly 700 metres beneath the Old Town and includes a number of themed rooms about the history of the town, old crafts and daily life of its residents. Everything happens underground, so the weather does not matter.

The tunnels grew out of cellars that townspeople kept extending under their houses from the 13th century. Over time they formed a dense network that reached well beyond single plots. What you visit today is one opened section, not the whole maze.

Another rainy-day option is the Museum of the Klodzko Land, housed in a former Jesuit college. The collections cover the history, geology and culture of the whole region: coins, pewter ware, Silesian mechanical clocks and contemporary art glass. To relax after a day on your feet, the indoor pool offers sports and leisure pools, a fitness centre and a sauna complex, a few hundred metres from the fortress.

What is there for children in Klodzko?

With children, check out the Minieuroland miniature park first. This private park covers about twenty thousand square metres and shows replicas of buildings from Lower Silesia, Europe and North America, along with a botanical garden and animal zones. Kids can spot the Statue of Liberty, Big Ben or the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Adults will enjoy the regional section, where the Klodzko town hall and the fortress itself stand next to models of Wrocław's town hall, the university main building and the Borek water tower. Seeing the fortress at a scale of 1:50 makes its real size easier to grasp later.

For rain or winter there are indoor play rooms. Yellow Park is inside the Twierdza Kłodzko shopping gallery next to the cinema, where animators look after the kids while parents shop. Senso Gaj on Wiosenna Street runs sensory and developmental classes, workshops and birthday parties. Call ahead before visiting either.

How do you walk the square, bridges and churches?

The main square is Bolesław Chrobry Square, a medieval market place with a noticeable slope. The town hall stands in the middle, with a Marian column from 1680 beside it and a municipal well whose shell-shaped bowl rests on four dolphins. Among the townhouses, look for the baroque House at the Stag and the former pharmacy House at the Moor.

The square also has a replica of the old pillory with a figure of a peasant, rebuilt from sandstone brought from Radków. Near the collegiate church you will find a baroque statue of St John of Nepomuk from around 1720, funded by the commander of the fortress.

Over the Nysa Kłodzka river, cross the Iron Bridge, a riveted steel arch bridge from 1882-1883, once called the Horse Bridge. It still carries road traffic. Over the Młynówka stream, a stone footbridge on Daszyńskiego Street links the Old Town with the Piasek district.

On Piasek Island stands the baroque Franciscan monastery from 1731, still active. Watch out for similar names: the church of St Ignatius of Loyola is in Ustronie and the church of the Motherhood of the Blessed Virgin Mary is in Zagórze, both different from the churches in the centre.

Where are the viewpoints and trails near Klodzko?

For views of the town, look from Forteczna Góra and from beneath the fortress. The other nearby hills are walking spots, not destinations. Szyndzielnia in the Bardo Mountains is 431 metres high and has a 19th-century lookout tower, but the tower is closed to visitors. A yellow trail leads there from Klodzko Miasto station.

Lower still are Wzgórze Marii (365 m) and Szpitalna Górka (about 320 m) in the northern part of the city, in Ustronie. Krzyżna Góra, just under 326 metres, is an ordinary urban hill with no described viewpoint or trail.

Real mountains start in the wider Klodzko county. From town you can reach Szczeliniec Wielki in the Table Mountains, the rock maze of Błędne Skały and the Bear Cave in Kletno, the longest cave in the Sudetes. For more routes see the mountains category, and for nearby towns try Kudowa-Zdrój and Nowa Ruda.

Frequently asked questions

What should you see in Klodzko in one day?

Fortress and its underground corridors in the morning, the square with its town hall, column and well at midday, and the Underground Tourist Route or the regional museum in the afternoon. The Iron Bridge and the footbridge are on the way. With kids, add Minieuroland.

What can you do in Klodzko in the rain?

Choose the cellars under the Old Town, the museum in the former Jesuit college or the pool. Children have indoor play rooms and workshops at Senso Gaj. The fortress also has underground routes, so part of that visit stays under rock.

Is there a view of Klodzko from Szyndzielnia?

The tower on the summit exists, but you cannot climb it. Szyndzielnia is better seen as a walk through woods and meadows than as a lookout. The town is easier to see from near the fortress.

Are there memorials and cemeteries to visit in Klodzko?

Yes. The monument to the defenders of the homeland stands in Sybiraków Park, and the Municipal Cemetery from 1892 has a war section and historic chapels. The Jahn monument from 1912 has not survived. These are places of remembrance, so visit them quietly.
