Things to do in Bielawa: the Kalenica tower, Aquarius water park, a lake and town hills. See what to visit by the Owl Mountains and what to do in rain.

What should you see first in Bielawa?

Bielawa lies at the foot of the Owl Mountains (Góry Sowie), so the strongest draw is a view from above. The Kalenica observation tower stands on the summit (964 m above sea level) and has two viewing terraces with a panorama of the Central Sudetes. It is a steel structure built in 1932-1933 and opened on 2 June 1933 on the initiative of the Owl Mountains Society. It was first planned for the top of Popielak, but ended up on the grounds of the Roztocznik estate.

Beyond the mountains the town has a few sure points for your plan: the Aquarius water park, Lake Bielawskie, the historic owl fountain and a small museum. Plan a mountain day and a town day separately, because they run at two different speeds.

Which hills and peaks should you pick for a walk?

Closest to the centre is Panek (455 m), the fifth highest peak of the Bielawa Hills, right by the built-up area. In the east rises Kłobucznik (364 m), also known as Strażnik or Łysa Góra. A concrete observation post stands on top, with a view of Bielawa and the Owl Mountains.

Higher up you enter the Owl Mountains. Wilczyna (665 m) lies in the Owl Mountains Landscape Park and has a domed shape with a flat top. Słoneczna (949 m) has the Sunny Rocks and a beech forest, and together with Kalenica it forms the Bukowa Kalenica nature reserve. The reserve was created in 1962 on 28.78 hectares and protects the highest beech forests in the Owl Mountains, at 800-960 m. The whole set of hills is on the page mountains in Bielawa.

What to do in Bielawa when it rains or you want activity?

The handiest is Aquarius: a sports pool, a children’s pool with a small slide, a 73-metre slide, a jacuzzi, two Finnish saunas and a wellness studio with a gym. Swimming lessons and diving courses are held here too. The facility is adapted for people with disabilities.

Activity also comes from the Fort Bielawa Shooting Centre, where you can shoot recreationally without your own equipment, and IPSC competitions take place on site. A kilometre from Aquarius you will find Bang Bang Paintball Arena, with games for adults and a separate offer for children. If you prefer quiet, pick the Bielawa Museum Branch: an exhibition on the town’s history since the 19th century, with reconstructed interiors and the story of the local textile industry. More rainy-day ideas are on Bielawa on a rainy day.

Where to see the town’s history and places of memory?

The Church of the Holy Spirit on Słowiańska Street was built in 1928-1929 as a single-nave brick building. The foundation stone was laid in 1928 and the consecration took place on 7 October 1929. The manor house in Bielawa is a former defensive manor from 1592, but its present condition and access for visitors are not confirmed in the sources.

The Jewish cemetery covers about 0.2 hectares and only three matzevot survive. The site is neglected, so visit with respect, in silence and without leaving the marked paths. The Owl Fountain on Wolności Square, from 1939, has a five-metre column on which eight dwarfs hold a slab with a sculpture of an owl, and the owl holds the Bielawa coat of arms in its left claw. Lake Bielawskie, known as the Sudeten Beach, was created in 1973 by damming the Brzęczek stream and today serves recreation.
