Podgórzyn at the foot of the Karkonosze: ponds with birdlife, a former Protestant church from 1780 and the Lisiura peak in the foothills.
Where can you watch birds in Podgórzyn?
Podgórzyn Ponds are 22 fish ponds in the Jelenia Góra Valley, spread between Podgórzyn, Sobieszów, Cieplice and Marczyce. They cover about 106 hectares and are an important refuge for water and marsh birds. For many people they are a quiet alternative to the crowded Karkonosze trails. The complex was founded in the 15th century by the Cistercians of Cieplice and for centuries belonged to the Schaffgotsch family. Entry is free.
What church stands in Podgórzyn?
The Church of Our Lady of Częstochowa on ulica Żołnierska was built by Protestants in 1780 on the site of a wooden church from 1742. After 1945 it stood unused, and a renovation in 1979-1982 restored it to use. Today it is an auxiliary church of the Holy Trinity parish in the Karpacz deanery. The church has a rectangular plan and three-storey wooden galleries, and a mansard roof covers the building.
Which peak should you climb from Podgórzyn?
Lisiura lies in the Karkonosze Foothills, between Podgórzyn, Przesieka and Sosnówka. Sources give different heights, from 485 to 525 m, probably because of different measuring points. The peak is built of Karkonosze granite, with a few rocks on the lower slopes. Lower montane forest covers it. Entry is free and the walk suits solo hikers.
Higher in the mountains wait Karpacz, Szklarska Poręba, Piechowice, Kowary and Przesieka.
