Attractions in Krzeszów: a Baroque Cistercian abbey, St Anne's Mountain with its chapel and the Chapel of Our Lady of Częstochowa in Borówno.

Why is the abbey in Krzeszów so important?

The Cistercian Abbey in Krzeszów is a Baroque monastery complex, regarded as one of the most important sacred monuments in Poland. It has the status of a Historic Monument of Poland and is on the list of candidates for UNESCO World Heritage inscription. Anna of Bohemia, widow of Duke Henry II the Pious, founded the monastery in 1242 and brought in Czech Benedictines from Opatovice. Pope Innocent IV confirmed the foundation in 1249. The Benedictines left Krzeszów in 1289, and the Cistercians took their place.

Where can you walk from the abbey?

To Góra Świętej Anny (St Anne's Mountain), 593 m, in the Krzeszów Hills. Below the summit stands a Baroque chapel from 1623, rebuilt in the early 21st century by local residents. Three small shrines mark a section of the old pilgrimage route from Krzeszów. The Cistercians built St Anne's Chapel around 1623, as the cult of the saint was growing. After the Second World War it fell into ruin, and after reconstruction it was consecrated again in 2011.

The third chapel is the Chapel of Our Lady of Częstochowa in Borówno, at 590 m above sea level, by a field road to Krzeszów. It is a Neoclassical votive chapel from 1801; the date is confirmed by a chronogram, enlarged letters in the Latin inscription on the facade. The abbot of Krzeszów, Ildefons Reuschel, funded it.
