Jelcz-Laskowice: a nature reserve on an Oder oxbow, a marksmen's range and a play centre for wet days. See what to plan in town.

Where to go for a walk in Jelcz-Laskowice?

The best goal for walkers is the Łacha Jelcz nature reserve. It is a water reserve on an oxbow of the Oder, with adjoining woodland, next to Jelcz, which is part of the town. It was created in 1954 to protect a natural site of the water chestnut, a plant that grows in the oxbow waters. It originally covered 6.90 hectares. The place carries the "Free" and "Nature" tags, so it suits a quiet outing alone or as a couple. Water plants and the woodland around the oxbow feel nothing like town streets, and getting there from the centre needs no gear or preparation.

What to do with children when it rains?

The Kosmos play centre at Oławska 21 is an indoor play space, open whatever the weather outside. Children spend time in an organised room, and parents know the rain will not ruin the plan. To add something calmer to the day, step into the Municipal Public Library at Józefa Bożka 11. It also runs branches in Miłocice, Minkowice and Wójcice, each with different opening hours, so check the days before visiting a branch.

What else to see in Jelcz-Laskowice?

The Bracka shooting range lies in the Shooting Park on Matczyna Góra. It hosts competitions run by the Strzeleckie Bractwo Kurkowe Grodu Jelcz-Laskowice (the Jelcz-Laskowice Marksmen's Brotherhood), including traditional tournaments in the spirit of marksmen's brotherhoods. If you like sacred architecture, look in at the Church of Our Lady Queen of Poland in the Jelcz district. The brick building went up after 1880 as a Protestant church. Services were held there in Polish even at the end of the 19th century, which was unusual at the time. Today it is a parish church of the Jelcz-Laskowice deanery of the Archdiocese of Wrocław, on Ogrodowa Street, with its mechanical organ preserved.

Beyond town more goals wait: Oława, Bystrzyca and Gać.
