Things to do in Brzeg Dolny: a convent, a baroque chapel, a swimming pool, paintball and a fir reserve. See how to build a day out of them.

What to see in Brzeg Dolny if you like historic sites

Start with the Borromean Sisters convent on Aleja Jerozolimska. The first three sisters arrived from Nysa in 1860, and the main complex was built between 1866 and 1895. The ensemble includes a former hospital, a former orphanage and a convent chapel, and the convent still serves its original purpose, so check the visiting rules on site. The project was founded by Countess Dorothea von Lazareff-Hoym.

St Hedwig's Chapel is a baroque cemetery chapel from 1665, built on an octagonal plan with a dome topped by a lantern. Tradition says it stands where St Hedwig of Silesia rested in the 13th century on her way from Legnica to Trzebnica. The synagogue from 1848 has served as a fire station for decades. The brick building was damaged by fire in 1885 and rebuilt, and after 1926 garages were added on the ground floor. The story of the local Jewish community continues at the Jewish cemetery, founded in 1689. Until 1762 it also served Jews from Wrocław, and in 1749 most victims of the Powder Tower explosion were buried there. The last burial took place in 1936, and after Kristallnacht only fragments of headstones survive. Visit it quietly and with respect, as you would any memorial site.

Where to be active, with children too

The easiest stop for families is the Aquasport swimming pool. It has a six-lane, 25-metre sports pool, a separate leisure pool with water massage jets, a 40-metre slide and a paddling pool for the youngest. The relaxation zone offers a jacuzzi and a dry sauna with a salt panel. The pool also runs classes for small children and water aerobics.

For younger children on a bad-weather day, try Kraina Zabaw, a play centre on ulica Zwycięstwa that also hosts birthday parties. Older children and adults can play paintball in the Burza forest: the venue takes players from age 8, as well as school and company groups. If you prefer shooting, the shooting range on ulica Olimpijska accepts bookings by phone only.

Where to take a break from town

Jodłowice Nature Reserve lies on the border of the Brzeg Dolny and Oborniki Śląskie municipalities. It was created in 1958 and covers 9.36 hectares, protecting the northernmost natural stand of silver fir in Poland. The reserve also has an erratic boulder protected as a natural monument and a nest of the black stork. Entry is free, and the area is under active protection, so keep to the paths. For a quieter moment with a book or a laptop, the TAMA library offers e-books through Legimi and work zones.

How to plan when it rains or time is short

For a short visit, pair one sacred building with the pool or the reserve. When the weather turns, pick indoor places from Brzeg Dolny for rainy days. For sacred sites alone, see churches and monasteries in Brzeg Dolny, and for more ideas look at attractions in Wołów.
