What to do in Twardogóra in winter and when it rains?
The Municipal Ice Rink on Gdańska Street is run by GOSiR (the town sports centre). It is a seasonal outdoor sheet of about 800 square metres, with an oval loop about 114 metres long. On site a rental desk holds more than 150 pairs of figure and hockey skates in sizes 29 to 47, plus protective helmets. You do not have to bring your own gear, and a family with children can find a size for everyone, as smaller helmets for the youngest are available. Skate sharpening is on offer. The rink runs in the winter months only and closes at the end of February as the weather warms, so go in the middle of winter.
When it rains, choose Kosmiczne kulki on Krótka Street. Inside there is a pool of a thousand balls, tunnels to crawl through and a slide, and the room also takes nursery groups on organised trips. For calmer plans there is the Reymont library at Wielkopolska 11. It has branches in Goszcz at Rynek 20 and in Grabowno Wielkie at number 99a, and its online catalogue covers the holdings of Lower Silesian libraries.
Which historic building to see in Twardogóra?
The Church of the Ascension of the Lord stands on Plac Piastów and is in use. It is an auxiliary church of the parish of Our Lady Help of Christians, built in 1869 of raw brick in the Neo-Gothic style, with historic Schlag & Söhne organs from 1903. The interior was painted in 1965 and the facades renewed in 1972-73. Locals call it the "little church". It has one nave, one tower and three altars. All-day adoration of the Blessed Sacrament takes place there, among other things, so visit with respect for those praying.
The town also has a former Jewish cemetery, founded in 1751 on Leśna Street. The gravestones vanished because of a sand pit that was set up on the site, so the ground has no cemetery form that can be visited today.
