Parks and nature in Nowa Wieś Wielka: a landscape park and two reserves with forests, basalt and a rocky gorge, all without a ticket.
How did nature protection start in this area?
It began with Chełmy Landscape Park, protected since 1992. It was the first landscape park in the former Legnica voivodeship. It lies in the Kaczawskie Foothills, and its character comes from relics of old volcanic activity, regarded as unique on a European scale. The park is also an easy place to start before the reserves.
How do the two reserves differ?
Wąwóz Lipa protects a rocky gorge with rare plants. The 1996 reserve now covers 101 ha because it was enlarged in 2002. It protects natural forests, rock-dwelling plants and monumental erratic boulders.
Mszana i Obłoga is younger, from 2015, and covers two hills. Protection extends to forest patches with rich flora, plus basalt outcrops and scree on the summits. A stone tower stands on top of Mszana.
