Churches and monasteries in Brzeg Dolny: an active Borromean convent, a baroque chapel with a legend and a synagogue turned fire station.

Which sacred site should you visit first?

If you only have time for one stop, choose the Borromean Sisters convent on Aleja Jerozolimska. The sisters came here from Nysa in 1860, and the main complex was built between 1866 and 1895. It includes a convent house, a former hospital, a former orphanage and a convent chapel. The convent is still active, so ask about visiting rules on site. The founder was Countess Dorothea von Lazareff-Hoym, and extensions continued into the 20th century.

Where to look for history and legend

St Hedwig's Chapel was built in 1665, funded by Baron Georg Abraham von Dyhern. It is a brick baroque chapel on an octagonal plan, and a nave was added in 1701. Tradition links the place to St Hedwig of Silesia resting on her way from Legnica to Trzebnica. The dome is topped by a lantern, and by 1740 a second, smaller chapel had been built opposite the entrance.

The synagogue from 1848 was converted into a fire station after 1926 and still serves that purpose. The brick building was erected as a house of prayer for the local Jewish community. It was damaged by fire in 1885 and rebuilt, and when the congregation ceased to exist in 1916 the town authorities took over the building in 1926. Garages were added on the ground floor, so today it is mainly a building to admire from the outside.
