Churches and monasteries in Krzeszów: a former Cistercian abbey, a 17th-century chapel of St Anne and a Neoclassical votive chapel in Borówno.

What is the history of the monastery in Krzeszów?

The Cistercian Abbey in Krzeszów is a monumental complex, regarded as one of the most important sacred monuments in Poland, listed in the register of monuments and recognised as a Historic Monument of Poland. The story begins in 1242, when Anna of Bohemia brought Czech Benedictines from Opatovice. Pope Innocent IV confirmed the foundation in 1249, and in 1289 the Benedictines left and the Cistercians replaced them.

What is connected with the cult of St Anne?

The Cistercians promoted it alongside the cult of the Holy Family. They built St Anne's Chapel on the slope of Góra Świętej Anny around 1623. In 1674 Abbot Bernard Rosa founded the Brotherhood of St Anne beside it, and between 1703 and 1717 Abbot Dominik Geyer built a pilgrimage road to the chapel. After the Second World War it fell into ruin, was rebuilt and consecrated again in 2011.

What is the chapel in Borówno?

The Chapel of Our Lady of Częstochowa in Borówno is a votive chapel from 1801, which today belongs to the parish of the Sacred Heart in Czarny Bór. It stands at 590 m above sea level, by the field road from Borówno to Krzeszów. A chronogram in the Latin inscription on the facade confirms the date of construction, and the inscription says that Abbot Ildefons Reuschel raised the chapel in honour of the Virgin Mary.
