Mountains in Rościszów: Młyńsko, Zameczna and Kokotna Łąka are three wooded Owl Mountains peaks, without crowds and with mining history in the background.
Which peak is closest to Wielka Sowa?
Młyńsko (777 m above sea level) lies less than two kilometres from Wielka Sowa, next to the highest peaks of the range. Kalenica and Mała Sowa also rise nearby. It is a forest peak with no marked tourist infrastructure, reached by walking trails from Rościszów or from the Wielka Sowa side. Its German name is Mühlberg.
Where do you meet traces of mining?
Zameczna (618 m) lies in the Owl Mountains Landscape Park, about 2.5 kilometres north of Kamionki. It was once called Burgsberg, and prospecting and mining works were carried out on its slopes. A path runs along the ridge, once a popular trail, today unmarked. The peak is built of Precambrian gneiss and migmatite, so take a map when alone.
Kokotna Łąka (603 m) is not a meadow despite its name. It is a wooded, dome-shaped peak with beech and spruce forest and steep slopes. The former Augusta mine operated on the eastern slope, and a vein of coarse-crystalline barite lay on the south-eastern one.
