Rościszów solo: five places in the Owl Mountains for a trip on your own, from the observation tower to the hillfort and forest peaks.

Where to go alone for a view

The Wielka Sowa observation tower stands on the highest peak of the Owl Mountains (1,015 m above sea level). The concrete structure was built in 1905-1906, and trails reach it from several directions, so it is easy to plan a there-and-back route. Entry is free, and the portal marks it as a place with great views, for couples and for solo walkers. It is managed by the Pieszyce municipality. It is built of concrete blocks, so it looks different from the typical stone observation towers in the Sudetes. The summit of Wielka Sowa itself has a separate entry on the portal.

Which peak for quiet and forest

Młyńsko is 777 metres high and less than two kilometres from Wielka Sowa. It is wooded and has no marked tourist infrastructure, lies in the Owl Mountains near Rościszów, and so it suits you when you like to walk alone at your own pace. Zameczna (618 metres) has an unmarked, little-used ridge route towards Wielka Sowa, so on your own take a map and check the forecast. Kokotna Łąka (603 metres) is covered in beech and spruce forest, and traces of a former silver and lead mine remain on its eastern slope.

What to choose if history interests you

The hillfort on Forteczna lies at 535 metres, about 2.8 kilometres north of Kamionki. The hill has an oval outline, and the summit shows remains of Austrian fortifications from the 18th century. The barely visible terrain rewards the attentive, so do not look for ruined walls. The name "Grodzisko" occurs many times in Lower Silesia, so in your navigation search specifically for Forteczna.
