Duszniki-Zdrój for solo travellers: a papermaking museum, three churches and Hutnicza Kopa on the watershed, five places for a calm day alone.
Begin at the Museum of Papermaking, housed in a paper mill from the 16th and 17th centuries on the Bystrzyca Dusznicka river. The first mention of a paper mill here dates from 1562. After the flood of 1601 the building was rebuilt in 1605, which dendrochronological tests of the timber later confirmed. The museum opened in 1968 and is run by the Lower Silesian Voivodeship Board. Handmade paper is still produced here, and the site carries the Rainy Day and Architecture tags, so it also works in poor weather. You can take in the exhibition at your own pace, without a group.
Three churches nearby carry the Solo tag. The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus from 1902 stands in the spa district and keeps its original furnishings. The Church of St Francis and St Leonard with the Franciscan monastery was built in 1925-1926 to a design by Alfred Trumpke, and inside hangs a plaque in memory of the victims of the 1998 flood. St Anne's Church in Zieleniec, Neo-Romanesque and dating from 1904, is surrounded by a historic cemetery next to the ski station. Behave in these churches as in any place of worship.
Hutnicza Kopa (884 m) is a border peak in the Polish part of the Orlické Mountains, not far from Zieleniec. It sits on the watershed between the Baltic and North Sea basins, and the Bystrzyca Dusznicka rises on its northern slope. At its foot is a road junction known as Rozdroże pod Hutniczą Kopą, where the Dusznicka Road meets the Orlicka Road. Spruce forests cover the peak, here and there mixed with acidophilous beech woods. Entry is free.
