Nature in Stronie Śląskie: relict old-growth forest, a cave reserve and Śnieżnik Massif ridges. See what the reserves protect and how to plan a trip.
What nature awaits in the Białe Mountains?
Puszcza Śnieżnej Białki covers 124.68 hectares on the eastern slope of Iwinka, at 980 to 1,000 m above sea level. It was created in 1963 to protect rare plants and natural forest communities: lower montane beech forest and high-mountain spruce forest of the upper zone. Part of the reserve is a natural deciduous forest of beech and sycamore, regarded as a relic of the former Sudeten wilderness.
Iwinka itself is 1,079 m high and lies on the border ridge between Poland and Czechia. Further away rise other summits of the Białe Mountains, among them Brusek and Kowadło. Smaller, but just as important for naturalists, is the Nowa Morawa reserve: 22.16 hectares of old spruce forest with a fragment of acidic beech forest. No marked trails lead to it, so it is ground for protection, not for a stroll.
What lies underground in the Śnieżnik Massif?
The Bear Cave nature reserve protects something other than forest: inanimate nature. It was created in 1977, about 2.5 km south of Kletno. Protection covers the cave formations, karst features and finds of Pleistocene animal bones. It is a reserve of the geological and soil type, so think of it as a geology lesson rather than a walk in the woods.
It belongs to the same area as Śnieżnicki Landscape Park, created in 1981. Forests cover about 60 percent of its surface, and its highest point is Śnieżnik (1,425 m). Reserves are only a part of the park, which also contains two ecological areas.
Which peak to pick for a day with nature?
Every summit on the list carries the nature tag. Sadzonki (1,230 m) stands next to the Śnieżnik Kłodzki reserve. Stroma (1,167 m) drops into the Kleśnica valley, near Kletno, and was once called Riemer Koppe. From Czarny Grzbiet (1,087 m) it is close to the Wilczka waterfall. Sierstkowa (974 m), Jahodnice in Czech, lies on the European watershed between the Baltic and the Black Sea.
For Stroma and Sadzonki our sources give no marked trail, so plan the route on a current map. In the reserves keep to the available paths and do not pick plants. For one day combine the old forest with the Iwinka ridge, and keep the cave reserve for a separate trip, because it lies on the Kletno side.
