Free things to do in Szczawno-Zdrój: the spa park, a lookout tower, five hills and a cemetery with history. A day plan without buying tickets.

How do you plan a day in Szczawno-Zdrój without tickets?

Begin in the morning in the Henryk Wieniawski Spa Park. Laid out in 1812, it has winding English-style paths, a monument to Wieniawski and a concert shell. Trails into the Wałbrzych Mountains start from here, so you do not need transport. Gedymin Hill (532 m) lies within the park and makes the easiest first climb of the day.

The park has a story of its own: as late as 1844 it covered only 3 hectares around the treatment buildings, so at first it was more a modest garden by the spa house. Today it is the biggest green space in the spa town and a place for a stroll without a plan. Gedymin Hill itself was once called Weavers' Hill or Hospital Hill, because the land belonged to the Knights of Malta hospital in Świebodzice.

Where can you climb higher and pay nothing?

On Chełmiec. The summit is 850 m high, and on top stand a stone lookout tower from 1888 and a millennium cross. Both places carry the free tag on our portal. The same massif includes Chełmiec Mały (776 m) and Cichawa (751 m), plus Stróżek (517 m) on the E3 European trail. If you have time for one goal, choose Chełmiec. With a whole day, add Cichawa or Stróżek and return through the park.

The way up Chełmiec is not new: in the 1880s two dirt roads were laid out onto the hill, and part of the forest was cut to make tourist traffic easier. Chełmiec Mały has steep sides and a domed top, and it is built of Carboniferous deposits: greywacke, conglomerate, sandstone and mudstone. Mixed forest covers Cichawa, which is separated from Chełmiec by the Rosochatka saddle. Stróżek used to be called Wachberg and watched over the area, and the E3 trail is marked in blue here.

Free does not mean unprepared. Take sturdy shoes and water to the summits, and check the forecast in the morning, because weather in the mountains changes faster than in town.

Is there anything free besides the hills and the park?

Yes, but it is a quieter place, not an attraction in the usual sense. The Jewish cemetery on Prusa Street was founded in the 19th century and destroyed during the Second World War. Today the site belongs to the municipal cemetery. Little survives, but the location was identified from old plans. It is a place of remembrance, so keep quiet and show respect.
