Szczawno-Zdrój solo: eight places for a trip on your own, from a church with a huge mosaic to summits where nobody hurries you.
Where in Szczawno-Zdrój is it good to go alone?
Best where you set the pace yourself. A calm start is the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, consecrated in 1937, with the largest mosaic in Lower Silesia in the chancel. For a rainy afternoon there is the Model Making and Miniature Aviation Museum, where four rooms hold model aircraft and you can try a flight simulator. Nobody pulls you along when you want to linger at a display case.
The church has an interesting record. The foundation stone was laid on 15 September 1936, and after the consecration in July 1937 it served as a branch church of St Anne's parish in Szczawienko. An independent parish in Szczawno-Zdrój was set up only after the Second World War. The model museum sits in the Biała Sala building on Kościuszki Street, and from 1998 to 2008 its collection was shown in Książ Castle.
Which summit suits a solo hike?
That depends on your strength and hours. Chełmiec (850 m) is the highest and has a millennium cross on top, plus a lookout tower from 1888. With less time, stay lower: Gedymin Hill (532 m) starts in the spa park, and Stróżek (517 m) lies on the E3 European trail.
If you want more secluded ground, look at Chełmiec Mały (776 m) and Cichawa (751 m). Both are wooded hills of the same massif, with no towers or attractions at the top. Just make sure somebody knows which route you chose.
Going alone takes a little organisation. Take water and a charged phone, choose your route before midday and leave yourself spare time for the return. Remember that Chełmiec can be seen from Wrocław, so the way down is always in sight, and the 22-metre tower works well as a landmark. Stróżek, once Wachberg, is not high and has a marked trail over it, so it suits a first try.
What can you plan for a whole day alone?
A good rhythm is the morning on a summit, midday in the spa park and the afternoon in the museum. The park was laid out in 1812 in the English style, so there are places to sit and listen near the concert shell. If you like calm, you will appreciate that there is nothing to book and no need to hurry, as long as you check opening times of the museum and church yourself before going. You will also find every place from this page in the overview of Szczawno-Zdrój attractions.
Where to find ideas beyond Szczawno?
More places for solo outings are on the solo page for the whole region. Głuszyca, Boguszów-Gorce and Sokołowsko are close. The summits you can visit without paying are gathered under free attractions.
