Złoty Stok solo: five places that are easy to visit on your own, from adits underground to a chapel on a mountaintop. Choose your route.

Which underground places to pick on your own

A guided tour does not rule out a solo visit. The Ochre Adit is an underground route, part of the Gold Mine complex, known for the unusual colours of its rock. You can choose it separately or in a package with other routes. The neighbouring Gertruda Adit and the Duke's Adit (Sztolnia Książęca) belong to the same mining complex.

The Black Adit, called the Corridor of Death, is part of the main route with the underground waterfall, the only one of its kind in Poland. Its entrance is in the upper part of the Golden Gorge. On the way look into the Museum of Warnings, Remarks and Appeals: several hundred old warning signs in a mine corridor, often with humour. You see this part together with the underground route. The exact height of the water drop differs between sources, so it is better to see the waterfall on the spot than to compare numbers.

Where to go for a calm high place

Góra Krzyżowa is 485 metres above sea level and lies in the Golden Mountains just above the town. Its prominence is 223 metres. The name comes from the stone stations of the cross set up in 1856, but the peak is also known as Pustelnik (Hermit) and Kalwaria (Calvary). The first name comes from Robert Domsch, who lived here as a hermit in 1920-1944.

St Anne's Chapel on the summit has stood since 1731, when it was funded by Siegmund Kehler, a lessee of the Złoty Stok lime kilns. In 1854 the Bishop of Wrocław formally established a hermitage there. Do not mistake it for the chapel of St Anne near Krzeszów: you recognise this one by its hilltop position and the stations of the cross around it.
