Nature in Bielawa: mountains, a beech reserve and hills above the town. See where the Bukowa Kalenica forest is and which peaks carry the Nature tag.

What nature surrounds Bielawa?

The town lies at the foot of the Owl Mountains, in the Central Sudetes, so forest and rock begin right behind the buildings. The Bukowa Kalenica reserve protects the highest beech forests in the Owl Mountains, at 800-960 m. It was created on 21 April 1962 on 28.78 hectares. It includes the summits of Kalenica and Słoneczna with the upper parts of their slopes and runs for about 1.2 km on the northern side of the main ridge.

The reserve lies in the Owl Mountains Landscape Park and in the Natura 2000 area Góry Bardzkie. Strict protection covers rare plants here, so keep to the marked paths and take nothing from the forest floor.

Which peak to pick for a day with nature?

Słoneczna (949 m) has a domed shape and the Sunny Rocks near the top. Wilczyna (665 m) is built of Precambrian gneisses and migmatites, covered with lower montane spruce forest. Both lie in the Owl Mountains: Słoneczna in the middle of the range, about 2.5 km north-east of the centre of Jugów, and Wilczyna south-west of Bielawa, which lies at its eastern foot.

Closer to town wait lower hills. Panek (455 m) borders directly on the buildings. Kłobucznik (364 m) has a gneiss quarry at its foot and a site of xerothermic, warmth-loving plants on the south-western slope. It is an interesting stop for anyone who likes watching vegetation.

How to organise the trip?

All these places carry the Nature tag and can be visited without a ticket. Take a map: Panek has no official website or set hours, it is a hill open without restrictions. The hills are listed on mountains in Bielawa, and free destinations in Bielawa for free. When it rains, switch to the Bielawa on a rainy day list. For a wider view, check nature across the region.
