What to do in Świdnica when it rains? A museum in the town hall, a theatre, a go-kart track, play rooms and the cathedral: indoor ideas for a bad day.
Where to sightsee in Świdnica when it pours?
For history lovers there is the Museum of Old Trade in the Świdnica town hall. It was founded in 1966 and tells about trade, measures and the scales of old merchants. Its biggest asset is the Councillors' Hall, a late Gothic council chamber with a rib vault and polychrome painting from around 1538. It is one of few institutions in the region devoted directly to the history of trade, and its collection holds old measures, scales and packaging. The museum is run by the Świdnica municipality.
Also under a roof is the cathedral of St Stanislaus and St Wenceslaus, a Gothic church with the tallest tower in Silesia and baroque furnishings by Johann Riedel. And if you want to sit down with a book, step into the municipal library at Franciszkańska 18, founded in 1947, with three branches in the city.
What about children when it is pouring outside?
This is the strongest side of the list. Cinema Fun takes children from the first months up to eleven years old and has a trampoline park and electric go-karts. For developmental classes go to Bawialnia Mysz Polna, with workshops for babies, preschoolers and carers, plus robotics. At Tęcza play centre children get a monkey-jungle frame and a ball pit, and an adult carer enters free.
How to spend a rainy day without children?
In the evening pick the Świdnica Centre of Culture: the theatre hall on the Market Square has 315 seats, and the Bolko Club at Grunwaldzki Square 11 has a hall for 300. The building on the Market Square also houses a Photography Gallery, and the club has the Upstairs Café, so you can sit down for coffee after the show. For a dose of adrenaline there is the M3Racing karting track at Westerplatte 56, with live lap timing and online booking. The track takes both single drivers and groups, so it is a good idea for a shared outing in wet weather. An alternative is the KSOS shooting range at Łączna 4 with lanes of 25 and 50 metres, which you enter after arranging a date in advance. It has 13 stands in total, and the club lends weapons from its own rental of over 80 pieces, so you do not need your own.
