Świdnica for couples means places for a shared outing: a stroll across the Market Square, a tower terrace, an evening at the theatre and quiet in a library.
Where to meet for a stroll across the Market Square?
Best from the middle of town. The Neptune Fountain is a baroque sandstone fountain from 1716-1731, with sculptures of Neptune, a Water Spirit and two sea horses by Jerzy Leonard Weber. Plates with the coats of arms of Świdnica, Austria-Hungary and the Kingdom of Bohemia close the basin. Also on the Market Square, at the mouth of Grodzka street, stands the Holy Trinity Column of red sandstone from 1693, funded by the governor Johann Joachim von Sinzendorf. His widow added the inscription dedicated to the founder, decorated with the coats of arms of the von Sinzendorf and von Kinsky families. The fountain lies right by the Museum of Old Trade and the Town Hall Tower, and a few minutes' walk from the cathedral, so the whole set fits into one stroll.
Where to see the city from above?
The Town Hall Tower is 58 metres tall, and its viewing terrace sits at 38 metres. You can ride a lift up, but the last two levels are climbed by stairs. The present tower was built after the previous one collapsed in 1967, and the first stood here in the second half of the 14th century. It collapsed because of demolition work on neighbouring houses, which weakened its structure. It is a good place to show someone the town and its surroundings without a long hike.
What to plan for an evening or a rainy afternoon?
The Świdnica Centre of Culture has a theatre hall on the Market Square seating 315 and the Bolko Club on Grunwaldzki Square with a hall for 300 and the Upstairs Café. If you prefer quiet, step into the municipal library on Franciszkańska street, in a historic building. The library has worked since 1947 and has three branches in the city. The culture centre also runs a Photography Gallery and its own artistic ensembles. Other ideas are churches and monasteries and attractions in Świdnica. For rain check Świdnica on a rainy day, and regional ideas for two are on attractions for couples in Lower Silesia.
