Churches in Świdnica: the wooden Church of Peace on the UNESCO list, a Gothic cathedral and lesser known places of worship. What to see in each.

Which church in Świdnica is the most famous?

The Church of Peace is the largest timber baroque church in Europe and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2001. It was built under the Peace of Westphalia of 1648. The cornerstone was laid on 23 August 1656, and the first service was held after ten months of work, on 24 June 1657. Albrecht von Saebisch designed it, and the carpenter Andreas Kaemper led the construction. The church belongs to the Evangelical-Augsburg parish.

What to see in the cathedral?

The Cathedral of St Stanislaus and St Wenceslaus stands on Jana Pawła II Square. Work on the present church began in 1330 on the order of Duke Bolko II, after a fire destroyed an earlier timber church. According to tradition the duke himself laid the cornerstone. The church was extended around 1400-1410, and from 1561 to 1629 Protestants used it. After another fire reconstruction ended in 1546, and since 2004 it has been the cathedral of the Świdnica diocese. It has the tallest tower in Silesia and baroque furnishings by Johann Riedel.

And the smaller churches?

From another era is the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the Kraszowice district, neo-Gothic, from 1890-1892, built as an extension of a manor that housed a chapel of the Elizabethan sisters. At the church of Our Lady Queen of Poland on the Osiedle Młodych estate, Pope John Paul II blessed the cornerstone in 1989, and the church was consecrated in 2001.

The Orthodox Church of St Nicholas the Wonderworker was set up in the 1970s in a former cemetery chapel, on a cross plan with an octagonal dome. For the church of St Andrew Bobola sources only say it is a parish church, so check visiting hours on the spot. The topic is also gathered on cathedrals, churches, monasteries in Świdnica, and the town is described on attractions in Świdnica.
