Mountains in the Szczytna commune: six Bystrzyckie Mountains peaks, from Ptasia Góra to Smolna. See which one to pick for a day with a backpack.

Which peak is the tallest, and how do they compare?

The highest is Smolna, 869.7 metres above sea level, once called Vogelberg. Right behind it comes Wolarz at 854.93 metres, a broad, elongated summit on the northern edge of the Bystrzyckie Mountains, above the Piekielna Valley. Its slopes hold stone block fields and small rock outcrops. Next are Biesiec (833 metres), Zbójnicka Góra (828 metres) and Kuźnicka Góra (816 metres). The lowest on the list is Ptasia Góra (745 metres). The gap between the lowest and highest peak is over a hundred and twenty metres, so all of them lie in the same mid-mountain landscape and suit day trips. Wolarz and Zbójnicka Góra lie in the Kłodzko county, in the Szczytna commune.

How do the slopes and trails differ?

Most summits are covered with planted spruce forests with some beech and sycamore, typical of the Bystrzyckie Mountains. Biesiec, the highest in the north-western part of the range, has a blue hiking trail, and a green one passes the foot of Smolna. Kuźnicka Góra lies between the valleys of the Bystrzyca Dusznicka and the Leszczyniec stream and is built of granite gneiss and sandstone. Zbójnicka Góra stands on the watershed between the North Sea and Baltic Sea basins. Before the war Biesiec bore the German name Todte Mann, and Smolna was known as Vogelberg, meaning Bird Mountain. If you like hunting for old names on maps, this is a good set.

What makes Ptasia Góra special?

It is a dome-shaped hill near Duszniki-Zdrój, with lower montane spruce forest and mountain meadows on the lower part of the northern slope. Mouflon live on the slope, and towards the north-west, facing Duszniki, the hill falls steeply. All six peaks carry the "Free", "Nature", "Solo" and "Great views" tags.
