Szczytna solo: six Bystrzyckie Mountains summits for a lone walk. See which have a trail and which a forest road, and how to plan a day without company.
Which summit is the easiest to reach for a lone hiker?
Easiest to plan is Smolna (869.7 metres), because a green trail linking Pokrzywno with Zieleniec along the Green Road passes its foot. It is the simplest way to reach the summit area on foot. A blue hiking trail runs over Biesiec (833 metres). Before the war it was called Todte Mann, so you can hunt for the name on old maps along the way.
Where do you meet fewer people and more forest?
Zbójnicka Góra (828 metres) lies north of Biesiec. A wide forest road with an asphalt surface runs over its summit, linking the Justyna Road with the Biesiec crossroads, which is handy when you walk alone and do not want to wander. Kuźnicka Góra (816 metres) stands between the Bystrzyca Dusznicka and the Leszczyniec stream, and a walking trail called the Justyna Road skirts it from the south and east. Almost all of it is forested, and it is built of granite gneiss and sandstone. The summit rises at the north-western end of the Bystrzyckie Mountains. The nearest bigger town is Duszniki-Zdrój, where you can visit the Paper Museum after coming down from the hills.
What to choose for a shorter, calmer outing
Ptasia Góra (745 metres) is the lowest, about 2 kilometres south-east of the centre of Duszniki-Zdrój. Mouflon live on it, and the Mouflon Shelter stands on its northern slope. Wolarz (854.93 metres) is a broad, elongated summit above the Piekielna Valley, with block fields on its slopes. Wolarz lies in the Szczytna commune in the Kłodzko county, and its name refers to its elongated shape. All six mountains carry the "Solo", "Nature", "Free" and "Great views" tags.
