Trzebnica solo: a sanctuary, a calvary in a beech forest, Winna Góra and museums. Six places for a quiet outing on your own.

Where should you go alone in Trzebnica for some quiet?

Start with the Sanctuary of St Hedwig. The basilica of St Hedwig and St Bartholomew holds the saint’s tomb, and the convent was founded in 1202 by Henry the Bearded as the first community of nuns in Poland. On your own you can take your time over the Romanesque, three-nave brick church and the Gothic chapel from the 13th century. Pope Innocent III confirmed the foundation with a bull of 22 November 1202, and in 1218 the community adopted the Cistercian rule. The site is open to visitors.

After the basilica, walk over to the Museum of the Cult of St Hedwig of Silesia. Its sacred art collection fills three rooms: the sacristy, the crypt and the Pilgrim’s House. The museum was founded in 1964 on the initiative of the Salvatorians, who look after the sanctuary. It is a religious institution, so visit in a quiet frame of mind.

Where can you walk alone in Trzebnica?

The Trzebnica Calvary is a forest trail with 16 Baroque Stations of the Cross chapels, built from 1734 by the Cistercian nuns. The stations stand among the trees at Pustelnik, and each chapel is 3.5 metres tall. The nuns of the Trzebnica convent funded the chapels, and Abbess Zofia Korycińska started the work. The whole complex is still being renovated. You can go at your own pace and stop at each scene.

For views, climb Winna Góra, a hill 219 metres above sea level about 1.1 km from the centre, with a landscape and leisure park on its slopes. Entry is free. For a rainy day the indoor options remain: the Regional Museum with historical and archaeological displays and the library at Henryka Pobożnego 12a, open since 1946.
