Mountains in Wojcieszów means the Kaczawskie Mountains: six peaks from 454 to 667 m above sea level, set along the Eastern Ridge above the town.
Where does Wojcieszów sit in the Kaczawskie Mountains?
The Kaczawskie Mountains are one of the lower ranges of the Western Sudetes, and Wojcieszów lies in their very heart. The peaks on this page belong to the Eastern Ridge and rise above the town in the Złotoryja district. The highest is Góra Połom (667 m). In the same area stand Skopiec and the Góra Miłek nature reserve, which protects part of the range.
How do the individual peaks differ?
Marciniec (624 m) is a small massif made of old metamorphic rock: greenstones and greenschists, plus phyllites and albite-sericite and quartz-sericite schists with graphite. The latter are called the Radzimowice schists. Spruce forest covers the whole massif. Chmielarz (585 m) lies between Dłużek and Polanka and has small rocks on its top. Polanka (546.6 m) has two summits, and a side ridge leaves it towards the hill of Bielec. Trzciniec (484 m) contains marble layers, that is crystalline limestone, and on the neighbouring pass lie the ruins of a seventeenth-century gallows. Zadora (454 m) is the lowest of the six: its top forms a fairly steep mound on an even ridge.
Which peak should you choose the first time?
For a short outing Zadora is best, the lowest of the six, because its western slope borders the buildings of Wojcieszów Dolny. For a full day pick the ridge from Marciniec through Chmielarz to Polanka. For Marciniec, Chmielarz and Połom the sources give no marked trail, so plan your route from a tourist map of the Kaczawskie Mountains. Marciniec lies on the ridge running from Bukowinka through Rogacz, Dłużek and Chmielarz towards Wojcieszów, so walking the whole ridge is a natural plan for a longer day. Polanka sits right on the way between Chmielarz and Trzciniec.
