Nature in Sobótka means a reserve on Ślęża, gabbro rocks, beech and lime forests and old oaks. Here are six places where you can see it.
What makes the nature of the Ślęża Massif special?
The massif is built mainly of granite and gabbro, and its rocks bear traces of an ancient ocean floor some 350 million years old. Ślęża is the tallest peak of the Sudetic Foreland, at 717.5 metres, and belongs to the Crown of Polish Mountains. The rocks include radiolarite, amphibolite, gabbro and peridotite altered into serpentinite.
The Mount Ślęża reserve covers the summit part and protects old deciduous forest, gabbro rocks and scenic value. It was created in 1954 under the name "Góra Sobótka-Ślęż", on 142.7 hectares. In 2003 the area was enlarged to about 161 hectares and renamed "Góra Ślęża". It is the oldest form of nature protection here, within the Ślęża Landscape Park.
Which forests and rocks lie lower down?
On Wieżyca a beech and lime forest with lily of the valley covers the north slope, and old twisted oaks grow on the south one. The summit is built of amphibolite, a dark green rock with crystals of very varied size. On the south-western slope of Ślęża lies the "Skalna" complex, 33 hectares protecting a group of rocks. It belongs to the Natura 2000 area Ślęża Massif. It was approved on 5 February 1994 by a decree of the Wrocław voivode, and the rock formations and geology of the site decided its protection.
Lower hills are Gozdnica, about 317 metres, and Bartoszek, 392 metres, crossed by the yellow trail. The name Gozdnica comes from an Old Polish word meaning forest, and the rise was once called Angel Hill. Bartoszek lies between Ślęża and Wieżyca and is one of the lower rises of the massif, wooded like its neighbours. All of these places carry the free tag.
How to combine outings?
Add views from the scenic places. A full set of protected areas is under parks and nature in Sobótka, and the whole town is described on the Sobótka attractions page. Nature from other places in the region sits in nature in Lower Silesia.
