What to do in Głogów when it rains? A castle with a museum, a swimming pool, a play hall and libraries. A wet-day plan with real addresses.

Where in Głogów can you shelter from the rain and learn something?

Best at the Castle of the Dukes of Głogów on Brama Brzostowska street. Built in the second half of the 13th century as the seat of the rulers of the Duchy of Głogów, it now houses the Archaeological and Historical Museum. It began as a brick tower with timber buildings that controlled a ford across the Oder, raised by Duke Konrad I of Głogów.

For football fans there is the Chrobry Głogów Museum on Wita Stwosza street, officially opened on 21 November 2014, although a partial exhibition existed earlier. It documents 65 years of the football club's history and sits in the club building, not in the castle. It is a separate, small venue.

What can you do with kids in Głogów when it rains?

Families have three good addresses. O.K. PARK at Bolesława Śmiałego 2 has an 800 m2 ice rink in a tent, so the weather does not matter, plus a play room and a bowling alley with a bistro. The rink season runs from mid-November to the end of February: on weekdays from 2 pm to 9 pm, on weekends and holidays from 10 am to 9 pm. Sigma Park on Wierzbowa street offers an automatic climbing wall with routes of different difficulty, an interactive floor for reflex games, trampolines and a ball pit. It has no official website, so check the hours before you go. The third is a pool: Chrobry Swimming Pool at Rudnowska 17B. The indoor part runs all year and has a 25-metre sports pool and a recreation pool with two slides, geysers and water massage. There is also a sauna zone and swimming lessons, and in summer the seasonal outdoor pools join in.

How do you spend a quieter rainy day in Głogów?

In cultural institutions. The Municipal Cultural Centre has run a concert hall, a gallery and studios since 1977, so check its calendar before you go. Libraries are the calmer choice: the Gallus Anonymus Municipal Public Library has worked since 1947, and its Retroteka branch holds old press collections. Branch no. 1 offers a virtual tour of its interior, and Branch no. 2 BLOG serves its own housing estate.

If a short walk between showers does not bother you, step into the Church of Our Lady Queen of Poland, a modern church from 1981-1987 on Kard. Wyszyńskiego square, built on the initiative of the copper-basin mining community.
