Głogów solo means a castle, a town hall with a tower, a Prussian fortification, churches and libraries. Places that work well when you explore alone.

What should you see alone in Głogów if you like history?

Start with the Castle of the Dukes of Głogów, now the Archaeological and Historical Museum, and the Town Hall. The castle was raised in the second half of the 13th century by Duke Konrad I as the seat of the rulers of the duchy: first a brick tower and timber buildings guarding a ford across the Oder. The town hall has stood on the same spot since the end of the 13th century, when a watchtower was built after Konrad I of Głogów founded the town. In 1349 a two-wing brick town hall was raised, damaged by great fires, among others in 1420 and 1433, and rebuilt after the Second World War. Its tower is 80 metres high and has a viewing terrace, so it rewards the climb.

The third stop is Turm Reduit, a brick artillery tower built by Prussian troops in 1857-1860 on Ostrów Tumski. It stands west of the collegiate church, where the Old Oder meets the Oder. It had two storeys above ground and a cellar with a powder store and a well, now filled in and flooded. Locals call it the barbican. Football fans can add the Chrobry Głogów Museum with the club's history.

Where is Głogów quiet and calm?

In churches and libraries. Among churches we suggest the lapidarium on the site of St Peter's church, with exposed foundations, and St Clement's Church from 1928, started by Cardinal Bertram, burned in 1945 and rebuilt by 1950. Also interesting are the Church of Divine Mercy, under construction since 1987 and one of the largest buildings in town, St Maximilian Maria Kolbe's Church, the Church of Our Lady Queen of Poland and the five-domed Orthodox Church of St Maximus of Gorlice.

A quiet evening with a book fits the Gallus Anonymus Library, at Jedności Robotniczej 15, where the Retroteka keeps old press and discussion clubs meet on site, or Branch no. 1 and Branch no. 2 BLOG. The first has a virtual tour of its interior on the library website, so you can see the layout before you leave.

What if you want to catch an event?

The Municipal Cultural Centre has worked since 1977 and has a concert hall, a club stage, the Creative Education Gallery, a theatre and studios, so check its calendar. Pick the small Concert Club Stage if you dislike crowds.

How do you combine these places into one day?

Castle and town hall in the morning, one church at noon, Turm Reduit in the afternoon. If it starts raining, move to the rainy-day plan for Głogów. Add culture in Głogów or the wider look at solo places across the region.
