Mountains in Grzmiąca are the Suche and Stone Mountains in the Central Sudetes: from Warzecha up to Waligóra, the highest peak of the whole range.

Which peak should you pick, from lowest to highest?

  • Warzecha, 793 m above sea level: a side ridge of Jeleniec, with small rock formations on its western slopes.
  • Gomólnik Mały, 807 m according to Wikipedia: a viewpoint on the north-eastern slope, opened in 2023.
  • Gomólnik, 826 m: spruce forest, within the Wałbrzych Sudetes Landscape Park.
  • Rogowiec, 870 m: a conical summit with rocks and a castle ruin on top.
  • Turzyna, 895 m: close to Waligóra and Rogowiec.
  • Jeleniec, 902 m: built of Karkonosze granite.
  • Waligóra, 933.88 or 936 m (sources give both): the highest peak of the Suche Mountains and the whole Stone Mountains.

What rock are these mountains made of?

Waligóra consists of Permian quartz porphyry belonging to the northern wing of an intermontane basin. Rogowiec, Gomólnik, Gomólnik Mały and Warzecha are Permian melaphyre, or trachybasalt, while Jeleniec stands out for its Karkonosze granite. You can see the difference in the silhouettes: Waligóra has an elongated ridge running north to south, falling gently on the south side, while the northern and eastern slopes are much steeper. Rogowiec is conical, rocky and steep-sided, cut by small but deep valleys. Jeleniec stands in the Wałbrzych county, near Waligóra and Rogowiec, and a few kilometres further on is the entrance to the Riese Włodarz underground complex.

Which trails are described?

Walking and cycling trails lead up Waligóra, and red, blue and yellow trails lead up Rogowiec. For the other peaks the descriptions give no route, so plan the outing with a map and check the trail marking before you start.
