Grzmiąca solo means hikes alone to Waligóra, Rogowiec and several lesser-known hills of the Stone Mountains, with a castle ruin along the way.

Which goal should you pick for a first solo outing?

Begin with a hill that has marked trails. Rogowiec (870 m above sea level) has three, red, blue and yellow, and at the top waits Rogowiec Castle. It is the ruin of a border fortress from the end of the 13th century, destroyed in 1482 and never rebuilt. On your own it reads well as a record of history: first a wooden stronghold of Bolesław the Tall from the 12th century, then a stone castle built at the order of Bolko I of Świdnica, and finally a residential tower and a semicircular bastion from the 14th century. The upper castle had an irregular, roughly triangular shape and an area of about 700 square metres. The mountain itself lies about 3.3 kilometres south-west of Głuszyca. It is conical and rocky, and its steep slopes are cut by small but deep valleys. Old landslides survive on the eastern slopes, and the Skalne Bramy rocks rise next to it.

Is Waligóra suitable for a solo trip?

Waligóra is the highest peak of the Suche Mountains and the whole Stone Mountains (933.88 or 936 m), with walking and cycling trails to the top. It has an elongated ridge running north to south, so the approach from the south is gentler than from the north and east. If you go alone, choose the gentler option and check the route before you leave, since the descriptions give no walking times. Also tell someone where you are headed. Waligóra is built of Permian quartz porphyry, and mixed beech and spruce forest covers its slopes, so the trip leads mostly through woodland. It is a good choice if you prefer shade to open space.

Which smaller hills give you quiet?

Jeleniec (902 m) and Turzyna (895 m) lie near Waligóra and Rogowiec, and a few kilometres from Jeleniec is the entrance to the Riese Włodarz underground complex. Lower down, west of Głuszyca, rise Gomólnik (826 m) and Gomólnik Mały (807 m), which has had a viewpoint since 2023. A calm finish to the day is Warzecha (793 m), on a side ridge of Jeleniec, with small rock formations on its western slopes. All these hills carry the "Solo" tag. From the area of Turzyna, towards Jedlina-Zdrój, trails also lead to Borowa with its lookout tower, if you want to add one more goal to your plan. Gomólnik and Warzecha lie in the Wałbrzych Sudetes Landscape Park and are covered with spruce forest.

What should you plan before you travel?

Look at mountains in Grzmiąca to compare heights, and at attractions in Grzmiąca for the full overview of the village. More places for solo travellers are in the solo category. For a longer stay in the area, check Głuszyca, which lies nearby.
