Mountains in Kowary are five summits in three ranges: the Kowary Ridge, the Lasocki Ridge and the Rudawy Janowickie. See which one to pick.

What lies in the Kowary Ridge above town?

This range has two targets. Wołowa Góra is 1041 m above sea level and is the main high point of a side ridge that leaves the Czoło summit northwards and stretches from Krzaczyna to Kowary. Paragliders use it as a launch site. In the same massif stands Łysa Góra (946 m), north of Wołowa Góra. Sources describe it as a modest summit without a distinctive peak visible from afar, so it suits someone seeking quiet, not a striking silhouette.

And what about the Lasocki Ridge and the Rudawy Janowickie?

In the Lasocki Ridge in the Karkonosze rises Sulica (942 m, some measurements give 946 m). Yellow and green trails lead up it, and a stone monument to a teacher stands at the top. Two roads with characteristic hairpin bends run from the Kowarska Pass side.

The Rudawy Janowickie offer two lower targets close to town. Brzeźnik lies on the northern edge of Kowary and has a domed shape, with a viewing platform with benches and an information board at the top. Góra Parkowa is 550 m above sea level, cone-shaped, with the remains of a landscape park from the early 19th century on its southern slope.

How do you match a summit to your plan?

Geology can be a guide. Brzeźnik is built of Variscan porphyritic granites with tourmaline and hornblende, and its slopes fall steeply. Sulica is made of gneisses and mica schists with inserts of amphibolite and crystalline limestone, and its top and slopes carry upper-montane spruce forest. Łysa Góra is made of metamorphic rock. For a short outing take Góra Parkowa or Brzeźnik, for a longer one Sulica or Wołowa Góra.
