What can you see for free in the centre of Legnica?
Start with the Cathedral of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul on Katedralny Square. It is the main church of the Legnica diocese, a Gothic brick building with two towers that grew gradually from the Middle Ages to the end of the 19th century. The first mention of a church here dates from 1208, and the present Gothic structure was raised between 1333 and 1380. The west portal with a Gothic stone statue of the Virgin Mary comes from that time. The cathedral also carries the rainy-day and solo tags, so it works when it pours or when you want some time alone.
On the Market Square, right next to the Art Gallery, stands Julek, a small sculpture by Edward Mirowski. A boy with a big schoolbag and a slingshot sticking out of it opens the series "Children of Legnica". It is worth a quick look because it lies on your way.
Where can you learn history for free in Legnica?
The Mausoleum of the Silesian Piasts beside the Church of St John the Baptist is a burial chapel from 1677 to 1679, the first Baroque burial chapel in Silesia. It commemorates the last dukes of Legnica and Brzeg. The second stop is the Monument to the Deportees to Siberia on Sybiraków Square: three vertical blocks, the tallest over 4 metres, and a bronze drape weighing about 8 tonnes. It was unveiled on 17 September 2015.
A quiet tone is needed at the Municipal Cemetery, the largest necropolis in the city, in continuous use since 1822. Plan your entrance from Wrocławska Street and remember it is a resting place. More about such sites is in cemeteries and monuments in Legnica.
Which park in Legnica should you choose for a free walk?
The City Park is the oldest and largest park in town, 58 hectares in the central part of Legnica. Its present shape comes from works between 1815 and 1831 to a design by Eduard Petzold. The North Park, formerly Nord Park, lies in the Głogów Suburb and has an English-style garden from 1897 to 1900, with the Czarna Woda stream flowing through it. For a longer outing there is Lasek Złotoryjski, a listed forest park of 52 hectares in the south-western part of the city. Other green places are collected in parks and nature in Legnica.
How to plan a free day in Legnica?
Start in the morning at the Market Square and Julek, then walk to the cathedral. Spend midday on the Piast Mausoleum and the City Park, because the Municipal Cemetery, the City Park and the cathedral lie in the same area. Leave the afternoon for the North Park or Lasek Złotoryjski. Add the Siberian monument if you like memorial sites.
The free tag means free entry to the place, not free travel or food.
