Legnica solo means a castle, townhouses, a museum, galleries and a quiet Greek Catholic church. See what to visit alone, at your own pace.
Where to start exploring Legnica alone?
With history. The Piast Castle is one of the oldest castles in Poland, built in the second half of the 12th century and extended by Henry the Bearded. Its walls are brick, and it is entered in the register of historic monuments. On the grounds you can see the remains of a Romanesque chapel of St Benedict and St Lawrence. Then walk to the Herring Houses, eight townhouses next to the Old Town Hall. The name refers to herring stalls, first mentioned in 1574, and sgraffito decorates houses 54 and 55. The route ends at the Cathedral of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, a Gothic brick building with two towers and free entry. A church here is first mentioned in 1208, and the present Gothic structure was raised between 1333 and 1380.
Where can you see exhibitions and collections on your own?
At the Copper Museum on Partyzantów Street you will find the only museum in Poland devoted to copper, which is also the historical museum of the city. Look at the neighbouring building too: the Palace of the Lubiąż Abbots is a Baroque residence from 1726 to 1728 with a cartouche bearing the initials LAL above the entrance. For art, go to the Art Gallery on Katedralny Square, where entry to exhibitions is free, and to the RING Gallery at Rynek 12. Both carry the couples, rainy-day and solo tags, so they also suit a quiet date.
Which quiet places suit solitude?
The Church of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Wrocławska Street is a Greek Catholic parish church, built from scratch between 1998 and 2008 to a design by Jacek Mermon. Inside stands a modern iconostasis. The Greek Catholic parish in Legnica has existed since 1957 and belongs to the Wrocław-Koszalin eparchy. Keep quiet, as it is an active place of worship.
If you prefer books, the library network offers a few places of different character. The Ekobiblioteka collects materials on nature. The Adult Lending Library works in a historic townhouse known as the Masonic Lodge on the Market Square. There are also Branch no. 1 and the Children and Young People's Branch no. 2, more neighbourhood than tourist.
How to plan a solo day when the weather changes?
In the rain, stay indoors: the museum, galleries and libraries carry the rainy-day tag, and you will see the whole selection on Legnica on a rainy day. In good weather, plan a route from the castle through the townhouses to the cathedral.
