Jedlina-Zdrój solo means palaces, churches by Alfons Weiger, an observation tower and quiet hills. See what to visit on your own, at your own pace.

What can you do in Jedlina-Zdrój alone?

Our "Solo" tag marks places where a person without company feels at home. In this spa town below the Wałbrzych Mountains there are surprisingly many, because besides the hills you find two palaces, two churches and a library. The simplest plan is one place in town and one hill, in an order that suits the weather.

Which palace should you see first?

The Palace in Jedlina-Zdrój is a classicist building from around 1792, two storeys high, on a rectangular plan with a tall hipped roof. The main entrance is marked by a portico of four Doric columns carrying a tympanum, with a balcony above it at first-floor level. On the sides stand two two-storey outbuildings with mansard roofs. It is easy to see during a walk around the spa.

The second, older palace is in Jedlinka, a part of town at the foot of the hills. Jedlinka Palace is a baroque residence from the early 17th century, whose design is attributed to Carl Gotthard Langhans. Today it houses a museum, a hotel and a brewery. Along the way it went from ducal ownership through a wartime design office and a post-war state farm. The village, called Tannhausen in the 13th century, then belonged to Duke Bolko I the Strict. The place also carries the "Na deszcz" (rainy day) and "Dla rodzin" (families) tags, so it fits an indoor plan.

Where can you see churches in quiet?

Both churches were designed by the Wałbrzych architect Alfons Weiger. The Church of the Holy Trinity, a Roman Catholic parish church, was built in 1934. Its form shows the influence of Byzantine basilicas with campaniles, meaning freestanding bell towers. The painter Paul Meyer-Speer and the glazier Richard Süssmuth worked on it, and after 1945 a mosaic was made in the chancel wall.

The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary stands in the Kamieńsk district and is a filial church of the Holy Trinity parish. It was built in the 1930s in an alpine style, with neo-Gothic pointed windows, thanks to the efforts of parish priest Dr Bernhard Strehler. These are active churches, so visit with respect and outside services.

Where do you go for a summit and the tower view?

Borowa (853.3 m) is the highest peak of the Wałbrzych Mountains, and the border of the town and Wałbrzych runs across its summit. On top stands the observation tower, opened in 2017: steel, openwork, with a terrace at 15.3 m reached by 90 spiral steps. From the terrace you see the surrounding ranges of the Sudetes, and the "Bezpłatne" (free) tag means you do not buy an entry ticket.

Which hills suit a walk on your own?

Near the spa pick Rzepisko (560 m) with the Aromatic Garden on its slope and Kobiela, where a park with gazebos, viewpoints and monuments was laid out in the 19th century. Farther in the Black Mountains lie Wołowiec (776 m), Mały Wołowiec and Kozioł (774 m), low and wooded, good for a walk without much effort. For a longer route there are Sucha (776 m), Wawrzyniak (668 m) and Stróżowa Góra (648 m) in the Owl Mountains.

For most of these hills the sources give no trails. Check the map and forecast before you go, and tell someone close where you are heading. All the peaks are described on the mountains in Jedlina-Zdrój page.

What can you do alone when it rains?

Besides Jedlinka Palace, a rainy day suits the Municipal Public Library at plac Zdrojowy 4A, a unit of the Cultural Centre. It runs the "Biblioteka na Kółkach" (Library on Wheels) programme, which delivers books home to people who cannot reach the library because of age or disability. For visitors it is above all a quiet place for a wet afternoon. Opening hours change, so check them before you go.

The whole town is collected under attractions in Jedlina-Zdrój, and ideas for solo travellers from the whole region are on the solo attractions list.
