Szklarska Poręba in the rain means museums, an aquapark with saunas and amusement parks. Here is a plan for a day when the Karkonosze trails are off.

What can you do in Szklarska Poręba when it rains?

Start with the museums, because each covers something different: rocks, a historic villa, toys and even cheap wine. The second track is pools and saunas, the third is amusement parks with a covered section. Every place below carries the rainy-day tag, so you do not have to guess what will work in bad weather.

Which museums suit a rainy day?

For rock lovers there are two private collections. The Mineralogical Museum sits in a villa from 1885 and shows fossils, including trilobites, and the so-called Carboniferous Forest of petrified trunks. The Juna Earth Museum occupies the historic Walloon Watchtower, reopened in its present form in September 2018, and holds the Local Brand certificate "Skarby Ducha Gór". The history of the building and the region is told at the House of Carl and Gerhart Hauptmann at 11 Listopada 23, a wooden villa from the late 19th century, now a branch of the Karkonosze Museum, with exhibitions and museum lessons. The Karkonosze Centre of Ecological Education has a tactile model of the mountains, large-format panoramas and captions in Polish, Czech, German and English.

Something lighter waits at the Toy Museum: Barbie and Monster High dolls, Hot Wheels cars, retro video games and LEGO bricks you can build with. The Cheap Wine Museum in the Walloon Cottage gathers over a hundred bottles and several hundred labels, partly a gift from Stefan Friedmann. Technology fans can visit the Jelenia Góra Power Industry Museum in a former water-powered plant in the Kamienna valley. The full list is on the page museums in Szklarska Poręba.

Where can kids burn off energy despite the rain?

Oponkowa kraina offers three tubing tracks on inflatable tyres. At Esplanada Family Amusement Park you can ride the Alpine Coaster among the trees and, in winter, skate.

To unwind, choose the Blue Mountain Aquapark & Saunarium: outside a heated pool, a slide and a jacuzzi, inside a large pool with a multimedia slide and a lazy river with geysers. There are also a Finnish sauna, a biosauna and a steam bath. In peak summer and winter season the venue does not admit guests from outside the hotel.

How to build a rainy day?

Museum in the morning, pool at noon, amusement park in the afternoon. When the sky clears, move on to the mountains around Szklarska Poręba or to attractions for families. A wider list is rainy-day attractions across the region, and the town page is attractions in Szklarska Poręba.
