Scenic views in Szklarska Poręba open from Szrenica, from Zakręt Śmierci and from the Izera peaks. Here are the places that work for a panorama.

Where can you see the Karkonosze and the Jelenia Góra Valley?

The easiest place is Zakręt Śmierci, a sharp bend on the Sudeten Road (provincial road 358) between Szklarska Poręba and Świeradów-Zdrój. The spot lies on the slope of Czarna Góra and looks over the Karkonosze and the Jelenia Góra Valley. Under the road, mine tunnels have survived, a trace of pre-war plans to blow up the road if needed. The bend was built in 1935-1937 and takes its name from accidents on the steep slope. The place carries the solo and couples tags, so it suits a stop on your own as well as a stop together.

Higher up, choose Szrenica. The peak is 1,362 metres high, stands in the western Karkonosze right at the Czech border and has a viewpoint and a mountain hut. A cable car runs to the top. The peak belongs to the Crown of the Lower Silesian Mountains, and its old German name was Reifträger.

Which Izera peaks carry the scenic views tag?

Wysoka Kopa (1,127.6 m) is the highest peak of the Izera Mountains, treeless after the ecological disaster of the 1980s, with subalpine meadows. Not much lower lie Izerskie Garby (1,084 m), in the High Ridge of the Izera Mountains, and Zwalisko (1,047 m), called the Evening Castle. Cicha Równia is 1,001 metres high. Czarna Góra (965 m) stands out for its scenic rocks and walking trails, just northwest of the town centre. From the Karkonosze comes Babiniec (998 m) on the Silesian Ridge, about 4 kilometres from Wysoka Kopa. All these places carry the scenic views tag.

Where do rocks act as lookout points?

Czerwone Skałki are granite formations at 952 m above the Kamienna valley, between Jakuszyce and Szklarska Poręba, over more than 5 hectares. Zawalidroga is a hornfels rock whose upper part looks like a human head from the west. It got its name because it lies across the trail and you have to walk around it. On the summit of Kozi Grzbiet (945 m) stand granite blocks, historically protected as a natural monument, and Przedział (1,068 m) has Owcze Skały and Skalna Brama. Mumlawski Wierch (1,217 m) on the Silesian Ridge has the Polish-Czech border running over its summit and hanging peat bogs on the slopes.

How to plan a scenic trip?

Start with a point you can reach without a long walk, which means Zakręt Śmierci or Szrenica with the cable car. Then pick one Izera peak. No marked trail leads to the top of Kozi Grzbiet, Krogulec, Kobyła or Tkacka Góra, so for a calm route Czarna Góra or Wysoka Kopa, beside which the Main Sudetes Trail runs, are better choices.
