Nature in Szklarska Poręba means the highest waterfall in the Sudetes, granite rocks, hanging peat bogs and subalpine meadows. See where to find them.

Where can you see water and a rocking boulder?

The Kamieńczyk Waterfall is the highest waterfall in the Polish Sudetes: a cascade falling 27 metres on the route from Szklarska Poręba to the main ridge of the Karkonosze. It lies in the Karkonosze National Park at 846 m, and its water flows down the Kamieńczyk river, a tributary of the Kamienna. The gorge walls are 30-35 metres high, and below the cascade the water has carved a plunge pool 5 metres deep. Behind the middle cascade is the Złota Jama cave, cut by prospectors. The second place is Chybotek, a granite rock group in the Izera Mountains. The largest boulder is about 4 metres across yet it can still be rocked.

What are the mountains made of?

The Karkonosze and the Izera Mountains are granite country. Przedział (1,068 m) and Kocierz (929 m) are built of Karkonosze granite, and Kocierz drops steeply toward the Szklarska Pass. Czarna Góra has a summit of granite-gneiss with aplite veins and weather-resistant hornfels. Zawalidroga is a hornfels outlier, and Kobyła (906 m) consists of Variscan porphyritic granites from the Carboniferous. Czerwone Skałki cover more than 5 hectares at 952 m above the Kamienna valley. Granite blocks also stand on Kozi Grzbiet, historically protected as a natural monument.

Where are the meadows, bogs and forests?

Wysoka Kopa (1,127.6 m) is treeless after the ecological disaster of the 1980s, and subalpine meadows grow on its summit. On the slopes of Mumlawski Wierch (1,217 m) lie hanging peat bogs, and the Polish-Czech border runs over the top. Krogulec, Tkacka Góra (897 m), Warzelnia (662 m) and Skalnica with its boulder fields are forested, and Gonciarek (631 m) is partly wooded. No marked trail leads to the top of Kozi Grzbiet, Krogulec, Kobyła or Tkacka Góra, so pick another goal if you want a marked route.

Higher parts include Szrenica (1,362 m), reached by cable car, as well as Zwalisko (1,047 m) and Izerskie Garby (1,084 m). For a calmer walk there are the lower hills of the Karkonosze Foothills, such as Danek (755 m), a granite ridge with scattered rocks at whose foot the Main Sudetes Trail runs. Skalnica has cliffs on its northern slope dropping toward the Kamienna valley, and Tkacka Góra lies near the Czech border, not far from Harrachov. Babiniec (998 m) and Cicha Równia (1,001 m) complete the list of peaks with the nature tag.

How to plan a day outdoors?

Start with the waterfall, and then pick one peak. Every place on the list carries the nature and free tags. The cable car to Szrenica is a separate matter, so check its rules before you go. For a longer plan, combine the rocks with a climb up Wysoka Kopa. The full list of peaks is in mountains in Szklarska Poręba, places with panoramas are under scenic views, and routes without fees under free attractions.
