Legnica attractions: the Piast Castle, a market square with the Herring Houses, the cathedral, the Copper Museum and parks. Plan one day.

Legnica has a compact centre where the main places are a few minutes apart on foot. The old town offers a Piast castle, a Gothic cathedral and Renaissance houses, large parks lie further out, and for children there are play centres and trampolines. This list helps to arrange a day so that you see monuments, rest in the greenery and have a plan for rain.

Where to start sightseeing in Legnica?

Start at the Market Square. It is a rectangular square in the centre of the Old Town, divided into the Large and Small Market, where the main streets meet. From here you are close to the Herring Houses, the cathedral and the Piast Castle, so you can walk the whole old town in one morning.

The Market Square is the main landmark of the old town. Right next to the Old Town Hall stand the Herring Houses: eight three-storey houses, four Renaissance and four Neoclassical. The name comes from the former herring stalls, and on houses numbered 54 and 55 sgraffito from about 1570 survives. By the Art Gallery stands Julek, a sculpture of a boy with a satchel, the first in a series about little citizens of Legnica.

On Cathedral Square stands the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, the main church of the Legnica diocese. It is a Gothic brick building with two towers, given its present shape in 1333-1380. Inside note the Renaissance pulpit and the Baroque high altar. Right next to it the Art Gallery shows paintings, artistic jewellery and photography, with free admission.

What to see in Legnica if you like museums and Piast history?

Enter the Piast Castle, the Copper Museum and the Mausoleum of the Silesian Piasts. The castle is one of the oldest in Poland, the Copper Museum is the only one of its kind in the country, and the mausoleum tells about the last dukes of Legnica and Brzeg. All three lie in the centre.

The Piast Castle was built in the second half of the 12th century by Duke Bolesław I the Tall and extended in the first half of the 13th century by Henry the Bearded. It is a branch of the Copper Museum. Inside you will see relics of a Romanesque chapel of Saints Benedict and Lawrence, the octagonal Gothic tower of Saint Peter with a viewing terrace and the round tower of Saint Hedwig with a green chamber decorated with polychromy in malachite shades.

The Copper Museum occupies the Baroque building of the former curia of the Lubiąż abbots from 1728, on Partyzantów street, and has worked since 1962. It is the only museum in Poland devoted to copper, and also a historical museum of the town and region. Right next to it stands the Palace of the Lubiąż Abbots from 1726-1728, today the seat of the museum. Not far away, by the church of Saint John the Baptist, lies the Mausoleum of the Silesian Piasts, a Baroque burial chapel from 1677-1679. It is the first Baroque burial chapel in Silesia, and the place should be visited in quiet reflection.

Where to walk among greenery in Legnica?

Go to the Municipal Park. It is the oldest and largest park in Legnica, covers 58 hectares in the central part of town and has a Palm House, a Summer Theatre and the Goat Pond. Smaller but historic is the North Park with an Art Nouveau bridge, and the town forest is the Złotoryja Grove.

The Municipal Park has trees more than a hundred years old, and owes its present shape to works carried out in 1815-1831 to a design by the landscape architect Eduard Petzold. A labyrinth garden was created here in 1810, and in 1860 the pharmacist Hedemann built a mineral water pump room by a discovered spring. The park was entered in the register of monuments in March 2010.

The North Park was laid out in 1884-1900 in the style of an English garden. The Czarna Woda river runs through it, and over it stands an Art Nouveau bridge from 1903, regarded as the first Art Nouveau bridge in town. At the centre is an exedra, to which the paths converge. The Złotoryja Grove is a historic forest park in the south-western part of town, one of the two largest forest areas within Legnica. More greenery is in the category parks and nature.

What to do in Legnica with children and in the rain?

With children choose Jump Heaven, a play centre in a shopping mall or the rope park. For older visitors there is an escape room and bowling. Legnica has many places under a roof, so rain does not spoil the plan. Check hours and entry rules on the venues' pages.

Jump Heaven on Fabryczna street is a trampoline park with gymnastic tracks, an obstacle course, basketball zones, a climbing wall and a foam pit. Xtreme KiDS in Galeria Gwiezdna admits children from 0 to 12 years. Kinderplaneta in the Ferio centre runs art workshops, science experiments and themed classes. At the Peter Pan Academy children from the age of three play with bricks and learn robotics and first steps in programming.

The Na Zosinku rope park opened in 2025 on the Zosinek estate, funded by the civic budget, with trampolines, a rope course and a zip line. Older teenagers and adults can bowl at SkyGames, where next to the lanes there are billiards, darts and table hockey, or solve puzzles in LockER. Children under 16 may play only with an adult. In the evening also check the calendar of events in Legnica.
