Free attractions in Przesieka: a waterfall, granite rocks and Karkonosze summits. A mountain day plan in which you buy no tickets.
What costs nothing in Przesieka?
All objects here carry the "Free" tag: two nature spots and the mountains. The easiest start is Podgórna Waterfall, the third highest in the Polish part of the Karkonosze. Water drops from a 10-metre ledge in two cascades into a pot at the base, and the granite walls around it reach 15 metres. A black trail from Przesieka to Sosnówka passes nearby.
Add Waloński Kamień next to it: a few granite rocks over two metres high at the foot of Płonik. Two joined weathering pots on the south wall of one rock ended up on its side after the block toppled, and they look like a human figure, hence the German name Mannstein. The rock is mentioned in the 15th-century Walloon Books, so the carvings on it are linked to the Walloons.
Which summit to pick for a free hike?
High up and with the border in the background: Tępy Szczyt (1388 m) with its boulder field, and Ptasi Kamień (1215 m), which on the Polish side lies in the Karkonosze National Park. At the middle level are Sucha Góra (1101 m), Garb (1087 m) and Ptasiak (1046 m). Garb has the Bielec formation below, and Ptasiak the rocks called the Bird Rocks.
These summits lie on the Silesian Ridge, and Tępy Szczyt touches the state border directly to the south. For less demanding outings there are Susz (708 m), separated from Mostowa by the Myja stream valley, and Płonik (682 m), reached by a blue trail to the Karkonosze Pass and a yellow one through Borowice. None of these targets needs a ticket, but check the trail marking yourself, because the descriptions do not give it.
Does free mean no rules?
No, these are protected areas. Ptasi Kamień on the Polish side lies in the Karkonosze National Park, and the upper parts of Tępy Szczyt are covered by a boulder field, with dwarf pine below. So stay on the trail, do not collect rocks and do not step into the rubble. Waloński Kamień matters for history too: it is a landmark from old books and a place with carvings.
How to join it into one day?
Waterfall and Waloński Kamień in the morning, one summit in the afternoon. On longer climbs take water and check the forecast, because weather in the Karkonosze changes faster than in the valley.
