Kudowa-Zdrój solo: museums, churches, summits and a library where you can go at your own pace. A plan for someone who likes quiet and curiosities.

Where in Kudowa-Zdrój is it good to be alone?

Best where nobody rushes. Start with the Skull Chapel in Czermna, a Baroque cemetery chapel whose walls and vault are covered with thousands of skulls and bones. Father Wacław Tomaszek gathered them in 1776-1784. The place calls for seriousness and silence, and that is exactly why it is better visited without company that distracts.

Three more places of worship are the Church of Christ the Lord from 1797-1798 on Park Hill, the Evangelical Reformed church in Pstrążna from 1847-1848, and the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Słone district, with a Czech-German cemetery from before the Second World War.

Which museums suit a solo visit?

Those where you decide how long to stop. The Museum of Minerals has over 650 specimens from five continents and a meteorite, and seeing everything takes about 40 minutes. The Toy Museum on Zdrojowa Street shows more than 10,000 toys from antiquity to the 1980s. The Interactive Museum of the Kłodzko Land has eighteen rooms, a hologram and a game with UV torches.

Nature is covered by the Table Mountains National Park Eco-Centre, and crafts by the Trail of Vanishing Trades and the Museum of Folk Culture of the Sudeten Foothills in Pstrążna. For a cloudy afternoon there is also the Municipal Public Library with board games and book clubs.

Each of these places has a story. In the Eco-Centre the Frog Museum worked in 2002-2013 with about 3,000 exhibits, and today's centre, opened in 2014, takes its place. The Church of Christ the Lord has eclectic organs from 1874-1879 and a Rococo altar installed in 1975. In Pstrążna the first building moved to the open-air museum was a residential and farm house with a smithy, and the structures were built without nails, with log joints. Such details are best noticed slowly and without conversation.

Where to climb a summit alone?

Skalniak (915 m) lies within Table Mountains National Park, so keep to the trails. Świni Grzbiet (528 m) is lower, with a flat top and a winter sports centre at its foot. Bluszczowa Góra (523 m) rises above Czermna by the Polish-Czech border. The lower hills suit a shorter walk and Skalniak a longer one. Tell someone which route you choose.

What else should you check?
