art exhibitions on the ground floor of a historic villa, run by the Historical Museum in Lubin

Lubin solo: museums, Gothic churches, fortifications and libraries that need no company. Here is how to plan a day on your own.

Where in Lubin for quiet and history?

Begin with the sacred sites. The Castle Chapel is the only element that survived from the medieval buildings of Castle Hill. The tympanum over the north portal bears the date 1349, and today the building works as an art gallery. The second Gothic address is the church of St Maria Domenica Mazzarello on Przemysłowa Street, raised in the late 14th century. Newer places of worship are the church of St Maximilian Maria Kolbe and the Greek Catholic church on Parkowa Street, built in 2006-2008, with two domes and a modern iconostasis. Both are active, so keep quiet.

Which museums and exhibitions suit a solo visit?

The Historical Museum has four branches, so you set the pace and the order. Its main seat is in the historic Town Hall at 23 Rynek, and one of its permanent exhibitions shows the everyday life of Lubin residents in the twentieth century. The Museum of the Lubin Region sits in the "Bolesław" shaft by national road no. 3 towards Polkowice. It was founded in 2002 and is run by the Society of Friends of the Lubin Region; a separate part of the collection is devoted to Jan Wyżykowski, the museum's patron. You will see mining machines, copper minerals, miners' clothing and a reconstructed gallery. The Lubin Pioneers 1945 open-air exhibition by the station has a Ty2-22 steam locomotive with a tender, four wagons and over 50 3D figures. It tells the story of the first settlers who came to town after the Second World War, and it opened on 2 May 2022. Pałacyk Gallery is more intimate and shows painting and other visual arts in two rooms of a villa, with free entry.

Is there anything for fans of fortifications?

Yes: the former artillery shooting range. It is a complex of earth and brick fortifications from the 1930s, with tunnels covered by soil, brick screens and brick ammunition stores. The Historical Museum looks after it. It was built for the armoured-motorised unit of the 4th Dragoon Regiment, stationed in Lubin barracks from 1889.

Where to rest from sightseeing?

Four libraries make calm stops for a bit of reading. The Czytnik library on Norwida Street lends books, press, audiobooks and CDs. The Łącznik library at 24 Odrodzenia Street has internet stations. The other addresses are Branch no. 3 on Żurawia Street and Branch no. 4 on Jastrzębia Street.
