Which museum in Jelenia Góra tells the story of the region?

The Karkonosze Museum has operated since 1889 and today occupies a building at 28 Matejki Street, put up specially for the museum. Its collections cover Jelenia Góra, the Jelenia Góra Valley, the Karkonosze and the Izera Mountains, and it is known for its art glass. It makes a good first stop: it has exhibitions for the whole family and everything is indoors.

The mood is entirely different at the Open-Air Museum of Polish Army Armament, a branch of the Karkonosze Museum at 81 Sudecka Street. You will see small arms, heavy weapons, radar equipment, a T-34 tank and a Mi-2 helicopter, plus an exhibition on intelligence activity in the Jelenia Góra Valley. Groups of more than ten people can book a guide.

Where can you see nature and literature?

The Natural History Museum in Cieplice sits in a former post-Cistercian provostry. Its core is what remains of the huge Schaffgotsch collection, gathered since the 16th century. The display is spread over several themed rooms and is entirely under a roof.

In Jagniątków stands the Gerhart Hauptmann House, the 1901 villa of the writer and Nobel laureate, designed by the Berlin architect Hans Grisebach. The interiors keep the layout from the writer's time, including the polychrome decoration in the main hall.

What if a palace interests you?

Among the museum addresses is also Sobieszów Palace, a baroque residence built in 1705-1712, now an education centre of the Karkonosze National Park. It stands on the edge of an escarpment by the road to Piechowice, and the master builder Eliasz Scholze of Bolesławiec led the work for Johann Anton von Schaffgotsch. It was first the family's main seat, later a summer residence. Similar ideas for worse weather are collected on the Jelenia Góra in the rain page, and other places in the city in Jelenia Góra attractions.
