Mountains in Jelenia Góra include Chojnik with its castle ruins, the peaks of the Karkonosze Foothills and Czeskie Kamienie on the border. Pick your summit.

Which mountain near Jelenia Góra should you climb first?

Go to Chojnik. It is 627 metres high, rises above Sobieszów, and castle ruins stand on its top. Built of Karkonosze granite, the hill hides many rock forms and caves, among them Dziurawy Kamień and the Robbers' Cave (Jaskinia Zbójecka), and the Robbers' Rocks lie at the foot of the northern slopes. The south-west slope ends in a cliff. Five marked trails lead up, so it is easy to match a route to your fitness.

Next to Chojnik lies Żar (685 metres), joined to it by the Żarska Pass. The peak sits between Jagniątków, Sobieszów and Zachełmie, is covered with lower montane forest, and has single rocks on its slopes.

Which hills are closest to the city?

Zamkowa Góra is 449 metres high and stands in the eastern part of the Jelenia Góra Valley, in the Łomnica Hills. It is not the Zamkowa Góra in Wałbrzych. Within a few kilometres are the Norwid Theatre, the Castle Gate Tower, the Karkonosze Museum and Paulinum Palace.

Koziniec (462 metres) is the highest point of the Dziwiszów Hills, about 5 kilometres east of the centre. The summit holds metal parts of a steel lookout tower from 1880-1906, and on the slope are the ruins of a 14th-century castle with pieces of wall and cellars. Ostrosz (462 metres) above Sobieszów stands out with a narrow ridge and steep slopes, and the blue trail from Sobieszów to Grzybowiec crosses its top. The same trail takes you to Trzmielak (647 metres), with lower montane forest and scattered granite rocks.

Which Karkonosze peaks are for the persistent?

Kopista (681 metres) and Szerzawa (706 metres) lie in the Karkonosze intermontane basin, between Jagniątków and Przesieka. Spruce forest covers both, and a string of rocks runs along Szerzawa.Kopista joins Szerzawa to the south-west and the Żar massif to the north-east through a pass. Chojnik Castle and the Szklarki Waterfall lie nearby.

Wężówka (781 metres) is a forested summit of the Silesian Ridge inside the Karkonosze National Park. A blue trail links Jagniątków with the Black Pass here.

The highest point is Czeskie Kamienie, 1,416 metres on the Silesian Ridge, close to the Polish-Czech border. The granite blocks are about 11 metres high and stretch for about 50 metres. One of the boulders carries the date 14 January 1929, commemorating the death of a journalist.
