Jelenia Góra

an 18th-century spa park with the Schaffgotsch Palace, the Spa Theatre and 78 tree species

Parks in Jelenia Góra are the Spa Park, the Norwegian Park and a wooden pavilion in Cieplice. Entry to all of them is free.

Which park in Jelenia Góra should you pick for a walk?

If you have time for one, go to the Spa Park in Cieplice Śląskie-Zdrój. Its roots go back to a vegetable garden recorded in 1713, and the first mention of a French garden dates from 1748. The main avenue was laid out in 1796 during the building of the Schaffgotsch palace, and in 1819 and 1838 the park was extended in the English style. It covers 16.4 hectares, 68 percent of it under trees, with 78 species and varieties of trees and shrubs. The Spa Theatre stands on the grounds too.

What makes the Norwegian Park special?

The Norwegian Park lies across the Wrzosówka river and extends the Spa Park to the south. It was created at the turn of the 20th century on the initiative of Eugen Füllner, a machinery manufacturer. The two parks join into one walking route that leads from the centre of the spa town towards the pavilion.

The Norwegian Pavilion is a wooden building in a folk style, raised in the early 20th century. Füllner modelled it on Norwegian architecture and on the Frognerseteren restaurant near Oslo. A restaurant worked there until the 1950s, and from 1967 to 2013 it housed the Natural History Museum. Today it is a restaurant again.

How do you combine the parks with the rest of Jelenia Góra?

Cieplice is a spa district, so after a walk it is easy to add historic sites or a trip to the mountains. For worse weather try the museums, and the whole city is covered in Jelenia Góra attractions. Parks from the whole region are gathered on the parks and nature page.
