Nature in Jelenia Góra means Karkonosze granite, spruce and lower montane forests, and rock outcrops and caves on the foothill slopes.

What are the mountains above Jelenia Góra made of?

Almost all of Karkonosze granite. Chojnik, Żar, Trzmielak, Kopista, Szerzawa and Wężówka are all built of it. Rock outcrops emerge from the granite, and on Chojnik there are also caves, among them Dziurawy Kamień and the Robbers' Cave. The Robbers' Rocks lie at the foot of the northern slopes, and the south-west slope ends in a cliff tens of metres high. On the south-east side a 150-metre drop falls to the Hell Valley.

Rocks appear on other summits too. On Szerzawa a string of rocks runs along the north-west shoulder, on Żar single rocks are scattered, and on Trzmielak scattered granite rocks. Wężówka has scattered rock forms on its south-west slopes, and Kopista single rocks on its slopes.

What forests grow on the slopes?

Spruce forest grows on Kopista and Szerzawa. The tops of Żar and Trzmielak are covered with lower montane forest, and on Koziniec the forest is coniferous in the lower part. Wężówka is wooded throughout and lies between two streams: the Pracz to the west and the Wrzosówka to the east. The Podgórna Waterfall and the Szklarki Waterfall lie near Kopista.

Where does nature protection apply?

The castle on Chojnik lies in the strict protection zone of the Karkonosze National Park, and Wężówka is within the park. Keep to marked trails. Chojnik has five, and a blue trail from Jagniątków to the Black Pass crosses Wężówka. The blue trail from Sobieszów to Grzybowiec runs over Ostrosz and Trzmielak, and a yellow one from Piechowice along the western slope of Trzmielak.

What is there to see on the summits and lower down?

Highest, at 1,416 metres, stand Czeskie Kamienie: granite blocks about 11 metres tall, stretching for about 50 metres. Lower, in the Dziwiszów Hills, Koziniec has a granite rock group below its summit, and Ostrosz a narrow ridge and steep slopes. Zamkowa Góra lies in the Łomnica Hills, in the Jelenia Góra Valley.

The Karkonosze Foothills include Chojnik (627 metres, Kynast in German), Żar (685 metres) and Trzmielak (647 metres). The Karkonosze intermontane basin holds Kopista (681 metres) and Szerzawa (706 metres). Wężówka (781 metres) closes the Silesian Ridge from the north, and on the same ridge Czeskie Kamienie reach 1,416 metres. With such a range it is easy to match a trip to your fitness.

Viewpoints that need no big climb are collected in the list beautiful views. The rest of the city is described on the page Jelenia Góra attractions.
