Where in Kłodzko should a walk through the old centre begin?
At Bolesław Chrobry Square. It is a medieval market square of about 100 by 60 metres, with a clear slope along its shorter sides. Eight streets run out of its four corners, two from each. The town hall stands in the middle, surrounded by a Marian column, a well and historic tenement houses.
A few steps away, on Kościelny Square, opposite the western portal of the collegiate church, stands the statue of St John of Nepomuk from around 1720. It was funded by Maksymilian Mitrowski, baron and commander of the Kłodzko fortress, and his name and titles are carved on the plinth. The saint wears liturgical robes with mannerist folds.
Which bridges in Kłodzko have a story?
The Iron Bridge is a riveted steel arch bridge over the Nysa Kłodzka from 1882-1883. It used to be called the Horse Bridge, after the square beside it. It still carries road traffic and links both sides of the river.
The footbridge on Daszyńskiego Street is for pedestrians and cyclists. The stone crossing over the Młynówka stream connects the Old Town with the Piasek suburb. The first footbridge here dates from the Middle Ages, but floods kept destroying it, and at the end of the 17th century rebuilding was abandoned. The present one appeared only in the late 19th century.
What else gives Kłodzko its atmosphere?
The barracks warehouse complex is a group of Prussian buildings from 1748-1751 at the foot of the Kłodzko Fortress, along Łukasińskiego and Kolejowa streets. They once held barracks, food stores and a military hospital; today they serve as housing and storage, and since 1984 they have been in the register of monuments. You see them from the outside.
